Summary

First General Assembly resolution devoted to artificial intelligence in the military domain. It affirms that international law, including the UN Charter, international humanitarian law and international human rights law, applies throughout the life cycle of military AI capabilities and the systems they enable; encourages States to address the opportunities and challenges of military AI nationally, regionally and multilaterally and to bridge divides between countries; and requests the Secretary-General to collect the views of States, international organisations, the ICRC, civil society, science and industry, with a focus on areas other than lethal autonomous weapons systems, and to report to the eightieth session.

The official text on documents.un.org cannot be stored: the site's robots.txt closes it to the archiver (attempts on 11, 16 and 17 Oct 2026). Stored copies: the UNODA page on AI in the military domain (disarmament.unoda.org, 11 Oct 2026, the record's secondary source until now), which confirms the title, the adoption on 24 December 2024 on the recommendation of the First Committee, that it was the Assembly's first resolution on the topic and the follow-up report A/80/78; and the text of the resolution itself, the UN document A/RES/79/239 (4 pages, Distr.: General 31 December 2024), as published by UNIDIR (unidir.org, stored 17 Oct 2026), which confirms the title, symbol, adoption on 24 December 2024 at the 55th (resumed) plenary meeting on the report of the First Committee, the operative paragraphs in the summary and the exclusion of civilian AI. unidir.org is not yet recorded as an official host, so its quotes count as secondary; the level rests on the UNODA page (alt-official). The UNIDIR copy is now the secondary_url, so that the record's local copy holds the resolution's text. The UN meeting coverage of 24 December 2024 (press.un.org, GA/12671) returned only a client-challenge page, also in the browser. The UN Digital Library voting record, which returns a bot-check page to the archiver, reports the recorded vote as 159 in favour, 2 against and 5 abstentions.
