Status notes

Launched by Prime Minister Mark Carney on 4 June 2026 (Prime Minister's news release of 4 June 2026; ISED news release of 5 June 2026); the strategy page was last modified on 8 June 2026. The Prime Minister's release says that over the next five years the strategy will introduce new legislation, investments and programs. It draws on national consultations in 2025, with more than 11,000 submissions, and a 28-member AI Strategy Task Force. Its legislative commitments concern consumer privacy legislation, online safety laws (including legal tools against deepfakes and for safe chatbot interactions) and the continued review of the Privacy Act. Further measures include applied AI research and testing with law enforcement and security agencies for fraud prevention, cyber defence and threat detection, a National AI Literacy Initiative, and, under the Canada-Germany Sovereign Technology Alliance launched in February 2026, shared AI evaluation standards and benchmarks. The government says it will review and update the plan.

Refresh of 18 Oct 2026. Stored for this record: the strategy page on ised-isde.canada.ca (the official URL; date modified 2026-06-08) and the strategy's PDF (Iu4-458/2026E-PDF, ISBN 978-0-662-35657-8), both stored 11 Oct 2026 and found unchanged since, which are the strategy's own text; and ISED's news release of 5 June 2026 (secondary source). The strategy's own text gives only the year 2026 (copyright line and catalogue number). The launch day, 4 June 2026, comes from ISED's news release and from the Prime Minister's news release of 4 June 2026 (pm.gc.ca, stored by the recheck of 17 Oct 2026), both announcements, so date_published is written at the year and the day is in the notes. The other notes rest on the strategy's text and the Prime Minister's release.
Second check: Independent check by Claude Code (claude-sonnet-5-5), 2026-10-18: 4 field(s) supported, fixes applied to scope_note.
