Status notes

One component of the CAD 2.4 billion AI investment announced in Budget 2024. The institute is led by ISED and draws on the National Research Council, CIFAR and the three national AI institutes (Amii, Mila and the Vector Institute). Its page names as its focus the risks of advanced AI systems, including synthetic content used for impersonation and fraud and systems that may be dangerous or hinder human oversight; its government-directed projects include joint testing with international counterparts and guidance to AI developers, users and the public. Canada is a founding member of the International Network of AI Safety Institutes. Under its international role, the institute's page lists the Network's mission statement, a Research Agenda on Risks from Synthetic Content and a memorandum of understanding with Australia on AI safety collaboration; its first blog post, on reporting AI evaluations, appeared on 8 July 2026. Canada's National Artificial Intelligence Strategy: AI for All, launched on 4 June 2026, commits a further CAD 50 million to expand its capabilities to track emerging AI risks, advance technical research and conduct transparent evaluations of AI models.

Refresh of 18 Oct 2026. The institute was launched by ministerial announcement within ISED; the stored files hold no text of an establishing instrument, so title, date and status rest on announcements and pages about the institute, which count as alt-official. Stored for this record: ISED's news release of 12 November 2024 (the official URL; stored 11 Oct 2026 and found unchanged since), which gives the launch, the initial CAD 50 million over five years, the home at ISED and the CIFAR and NRC research streams; and the page of Canada's National Artificial Intelligence Strategy: AI for All (secondary source), which commits a further CAD 50 million to expand the institute. The institute's own page on ised-isde.canada.ca (date modified 2026-07-08), which gives its focus, research streams, partners and publications, and ISED's news release of 5 June 2026, which dates the strategy's launch to 4 June 2026 (date_last_updated), were stored by the recheck of 17 Oct 2026.
