Summary
Announcement of a new U.S. AI Safety Institute, led by the National Institute of Standards and Technology in the Department of Commerce, as part of NIST's response to Executive Order 14110. The institute was to build on the AI Risk Management Framework to improve organizations' ability to evaluate and validate AI systems, partner with other agencies on evaluating AI capabilities, limitations, risks and impacts and on building testbeds, and work with ally and partner countries to share best practices and align capability evaluation and red-team guidance and benchmarks. An AI Safety Institute Consortium supports its work.

checker: The press release (title) could not be stored; title has no stored evidence and the evidence script reports it. Other fields rest on alt-official NIST documents, so level A is not reachable. Summary now follows NIST's own description. Scope core. Step 4 search on 18 Oct 2026 for an amendmen Issue #135

Status notes
Announced on 1 November 2023 at the UK's AI Safety Summit 2023, in which Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo took part, as part of NIST's response to Executive Order 14110 (US-04). On 2 November 2023 NIST called for participants in the AI Safety Institute Consortium, a core element of the institute. The Commerce Secretary's statement of 3 June 2025 transformed the institute into the Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI) within NIST (US-15). By October 2026 NIST presents the center as the Center for Advancing Innovation and Standards for Super Intelligence (CAISSI).

CAUTION: no official source confirms the title, date and status; the record rests on secondary sources. PARTIAL. Recheck of 17 Oct 2026: the press release itself is not stored. commerce.gov answered every attempt with HTTP 403 (11, 16 and 17 Oct 2026) and the browser retry timed out, so the title rests on version 1 and on no stored file. Stored in this run from nist.gov: NIST's news release of 2 Nov 2023, which says the institute was 'announced yesterday' and describes its tasks (date_published, issuing body, summary); the CAISI evaluation report of September 2025, which dates the Commerce Secretary's tasking of CAISI to 3 Jun 2025 and cites his statement transforming the institute into CAISI (status, date_last_updated); and the CAISSI page (the current name). These are other NIST documents, not the press release, so they count at most as alt-official evidence. The White House fact sheet of 1 Nov 2023 could not be stored (DNS lookup failed). The summary now follows NIST's description of the institute; version 1's 'lead federal AI safety work', 'standards for authenticating AI-generated content' and 'allied safety institutes such as the UK's' are not in a stored file and were dropped, and the topic 'general-purpose / frontier AI' was removed for the same reason.
