Summary

Public summary of NATO's revised AI strategy, which updates the 2021 strategy as generative AI and frontier or foundation models spread. It aims to have NATO and Allies lead by example in the responsible use of AI for defence and security, to accelerate AI adoption, to protect NATO's AI technologies and manage related risks by operationalising the six Principles of Responsible Use, and to safeguard against adversarial use of AI. It calls for an Alliance-wide AI testing, evaluation, verification and validation (TEV&V) landscape, standards and review tools for responsible adoption, and testing facilities that check whether AI applications can be used safely.

Status notes

Dated 10 July 2024; NATO lists it with the Washington Summit of 8-11 July 2024. The revised strategy updates the Outcomes of NATO's 2021 AI Strategy and adds new ones. The six Principles of Responsible Use (lawfulness, responsibility and accountability, explainability and traceability, reliability, governability, bias mitigation) were endorsed by Allies in the 2021 strategy. It also names AI-enabled disinformation and information operations, which could affect elections and lower trust in institutions, as concerns for the Alliance. The published text is a summary of the strategy. NATO's members include the United States and Canada, although the record's region is Europe.

Stored and read in this run: the nato.int official text (snapshot of 17 Oct 2026, whose strategy text matches the snapshot of 11 Oct 2026), which confirms the title, the date of 10 July 2024, the aims, the outcomes including the TEV&V landscape, the Principles of Responsible Use and the passages on testing facilities, adversarial use and AI-enabled information operations. The page does not say who agreed the revised strategy, so the issuing body is given as NATO. Version 1's claim that the full strategy is not public, and the date of the 2021 strategy, are not in the stored text and were removed from the notes; 'human oversight' was dropped from the topics because the text only names the principle of governability.
Second check: Independent check by Claude Code (claude-sonnet-5-5), 2026-10-17: 6 field(s) supported.
