Status notes
Announced by Prime Minister Kishida at the AI Strategy Council on 21 December 2023 and launched on 14 February 2024. Its overview of 1 July 2026 describes it as a government-related organisation in which 12 ministries and agencies and 5 related organisations take part, with the secretariat in IPA, which falls under METI and the Digital Agency. Government policy on AI safety is discussed in a liaison council of the ministries whose secretariat is the Cabinet Office, and an AISI Steering Committee chaired by the Executive Director (Akiko Murakami, part-time) deliberates on its work. The second AI Basic Plan (14 Jul 2026) calls for strengthening AISI's technical evaluation and feeding its results into policy. AISI has no specific statutory basis in the AI Promotion Act.

Stored: J-AISI's Japanese 'About AISI' page and its Japanese and English overview decks dated 1 July 2026, all from aisi.go.jp. They confirm the announcement of 21 December 2023, the launch on 14 February 2024, the secretariat in IPA, the designation as central institution in the Integrated Innovation Strategy 2024 (Cabinet decision of 4 June 2024), the tasks, the government-related structure and the part-time Executive Director. The English deck is J-AISI's own English edition of its overview; it calls the body 'Japan AI Safety Institute (J-AISI)'. The IPA press release of 14 February 2024 could not be stored (HTTP 404). The statements on the second AI Basic Plan and on the AI Promotion Act rest on the records JP-06 and JP-04, not on this record's stored files. The English deck names IPA 'Innovation Platform Agency' on pages 7 and 10 and 'IT Promotion Agency, Japan' on page 8; the site footer uses 'Information-technology Promotion Agency, Japan'.
