Summary

Voluntary, rights-preserving, non-sector-specific and use-case agnostic framework, directed by the National Artificial Intelligence Initiative Act of 2020, to help organizations designing, developing, deploying or using AI systems manage AI risks. Part 1 frames AI risks and the characteristics of trustworthy AI: valid and reliable, safe, secure and resilient, accountable and transparent, explainable and interpretable, privacy-enhanced, and fair with harmful biases managed. Part 2, the Core, sets four functions, Govern, Map, Measure and Manage, broken down into categories and subcategories.

Status notes

Released on 26 January 2023 after a request for information (July 2021), a concept paper, two public drafts (17 March and 18 August 2022) and workshops. NIST describes it as a living document, with a review with formal input from the AI community expected no later than 2028. NIST also publishes a companion AI RMF Playbook, a Roadmap and a Crosswalk, and Arabic and Japanese translations. On 26 July 2024 NIST released the Generative Artificial Intelligence Profile (NIST AI 600-1), and on 7 April 2026 a concept note for an AI RMF Profile on Trustworthy AI in Critical Infrastructure. NIST states that the AI RMF 1.0 is being revised as part of the White House AI Action Plan of July 2025, which recommends revising the framework to eliminate references to misinformation, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and climate change.

Recheck of 17 Oct 2026: the NIST publication page was stored again on 17 Oct 2026 (it changed only in its 'Accessed' date) and confirms the title, NIST AI 100-1, the DOI and the 26 Jan 2023 date. The framework itself (NIST AI 100-1 PDF on nvlpubs.nist.gov) was stored in this run and confirms the title, the January 2023 date, the voluntary character, the trustworthiness characteristics and the four Core functions. The NIST AI RMF page stored on 11 Oct 2026 confirms the revision under the AI Action Plan, the drafts, companion resources, translations and the 7 Apr 2026 critical-infrastructure concept note; the Action Plan PDF (whitehouse.gov) was stored in this run for its recommendation on the framework. Version 1's remark that NIST is moving to 'super intelligence' terminology after EO 14434 was removed from the notes: no stored file of this record says so.
