Status notes

Rule 6A-1.0957, first adopted in 2023 (effective 22 Aug 2023), requires local policies for student access to the internet. Notices of development of the AI amendment were published on 8 Jun and 21 Jul 2026 and the proposed amendment on 26 Aug 2026, with a hearing before the State Board of Education on 16 Sep 2026, at which the Board adopted the AI rules. A notice of change published on 18 Sep 2026 added definitions of autonomous or agentic AI, the supervision, logging and shut-off requirements for agentic tools, the ban on AI as a decision maker without human review, and reporting of unexpected autonomous behaviour or security incidents. The policies must also require tools that are accurate, transparent and viewpoint neutral, a public list of approved tools, records of student interactions kept at least 30 days for parental access, and reports to the Department on the tools in use. The rule was filed with the Department of State on 9 Oct 2026 and takes effect on 29 Oct 2026.
