Status notes
Adopted on 24 January 2024 and published in the Official Journal C series on 14 February 2024; it entered into force on 21 February 2024 (Article 9). It was adopted ahead of the AI Act, after the co-legislators' political agreement of 8 December 2023, so that preparation of the Act's implementation could start, and it says it may be revised once the Regulation is adopted. The Office's officials come from the Directorate-General's staff and its operational expenditure from the Digital Europe Programme's specific objective on AI. It is not a European Office within the meaning of the Financial Regulation. As of September 2026 the Office has more than 125 staff in six units, among them unit A3 'AI Safety', and two advisers, a Lead Scientific Adviser and an International Affairs Adviser. Under the powers the AI Act gives the Commission it enforces the rules for general-purpose AI models: it can evaluate models, request information and measures from providers and, in case of infringement, restrict a model's public availability and issue direct fines.

Stored and read in this run: the EUR-Lex text of the Decision (HTML and PDF of the OJ C publication), which confirms the title, the date of 24 January 2024, the OJ C reference C/2024/1459 of 14 Feb 2024, the document number C/2024/390, the EUR-Lex status 'In force', entry into force on 21 Feb 2024 (Article 9) and the tasks in the summary; and the Commission's library page for the Decision (digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu, secondary source), which gives the publication date of 24 January 2024 and the placement within DG CONNECT. Also stored: the Commission's AI Office page (digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu, last updated 8 September 2026), which gives the Office's staff, units and advisers and its enforcement of the AI Act's rules for general-purpose AI models, including fines; the notes on these points rest on it, not on the Decision. The page's printable PDF version is not stored, because the site's robots.txt does not allow automated downloads of it. Version 1's statements on the enforceability date of 2 Aug 2026 and on the Digital Omnibus widening the Office's remit are in neither stored text and were removed from the notes.
