Summary

Australia's core guidance for the responsible adoption of AI across the economy, for both developers and deployers of AI systems. It sets out 6 practices aligned with Australia's AI Ethics Principles and international standards: decide who is accountable, understand impacts and plan accordingly, measure and manage risks, share essential information, test and monitor, and maintain human control. It comes as Foundations, for organisations such as small and medium-sized enterprises and not-for-profits, and as Implementation practices for governance professionals and technical experts.

Status notes

Published in October 2025 as the first update of the Voluntary AI Safety Standard of September 2024. The update condensed the standard's 10 guardrails into 6 essential practices, removed redundant language and extended the guidance to AI developers as well as deployers; an appendix maps each practice of the standard to the new implementation practices. Supporting tools referred to in the guidance include AI screening questions, a triage template and an AI register template.

Recheck of 17 Oct 2026: the record's DISR URL now redirects to the National AI Centre's ai.gov.au page of the implementation guidance (stored 11 Oct 2026; the page is marked 'Published 05 May 2026'). Re-read that page and the implementation guidance PDF (National Artificial Intelligence Centre, dated October 2025, stored 11 Oct 2026): title, the 6 practices, the Foundations and Implementation practices versions, alignment with the AI Ethics Principles and international standards, and its account of updating the VAISS. Stored in this run: DISR's page of the Voluntary AI Safety Standard, which gives the publication day ('On 21 October 2025, we published the Guidance for AI Adoption') and shows the National Artificial Intelligence Centre publishing on the Department of Industry, Science and Resources site. The earlier summary's 'AI policy template' is not in this record's stored files and was removed.
