Summary
Government response to the consultation on the March 2023 AI regulation white paper. It keeps the five cross-sectoral principles for existing regulators on a non-statutory basis, sets up a central function in DSIT for cross-sectoral AI risk monitoring and regulator coordination, and plans targeted consultation on a cross-economy AI risk register. For highly capable general-purpose AI it relies for now on voluntary measures by developers and on testing of models before and after deployment, led by the AI Safety Institute, and sets out the case for future targeted binding requirements on their developers.

Status notes
Presented to Parliament on 6 February 2024 as Command Paper CP 1019, in response to the consultation on the white paper of March 2023, which ran from 29 March to 21 June 2023 and received 409 responses. It asked a number of regulators to publish their strategic approach to AI by 30 April 2024, announced £10 million for regulators' AI capabilities and a steering committee of government and regulator representatives, and left a statutory duty on regulators to have due regard to the principles for after a review of an initial period of non-statutory implementation.

Stored and read in this run: the GOV.UK consultation outcome page with the full text of the response (snapshot of 11 Oct 2026, unchanged on 17 Oct), which gives the title, CP 1019, presentation to Parliament on 6 February 2024 and the passages behind the summary and notes; and the consultation page (stored 17 Oct 2026 and proposed as the new secondary source), which records 'Government response to consultation published' on 6 February 2024, the consultation period and 409 responses, with the response's web-ready and print-ready PDFs. The former secondary source was the white paper's publication page (GB-01's source), and the two PDFs linked from the response page are a November 2023 response to a different review and the white paper's March 2023 impact assessment. Version 1's notes on the Labour government's plans for frontier-AI legislation are not in a stored file and were removed (see open questions).
