Summary
Designates the Digital Trust Centre, which IMDA had appointed Nanyang Technological University to establish in June 2022, as Singapore's AI Safety Institute. Building on the Centre's work, the AISI is to address gaps in global AI safety science using Singapore's work in AI evaluation and testing, pull together the national research ecosystem, collaborate with other countries' AISIs and give science-based input to AI governance. Its initial research areas are testing and evaluation; safe model design, development and deployment; content assurance; and governance and policy. IMDA is the overall government agency for the AISI and the Centre does its technical work.

Status notes
IMDA's factsheet announcing the designation carries the dateline Singapore, 22 May 2024; IMDA last updated the page on 10 Oct 2024. The Digital Trust Centre was set up with initial funding of S$50 million to drive research and innovation in trust technologies, with AI testing and privacy-enhancing technologies among its research areas; its work is funded by a $50 million grant from the National Research Foundation and IMDA starting from 1 Oct 2022. At the designation, Singapore was in discussions with the US and UK AISIs on collaboration, particularly on generative AI evaluations, and presented the designation as an extension of work such as expanding AI Verify to test generative AI safety. The AISI's technical testing now covers multilingual and agentic AI, partly jointly with other members of the international Network for Advanced AI Measurement, Evaluation and Science (NAAIMES), and it studies societal impacts such as emotional dependency.

Recheck of 18 Oct 2026. Stored and read: IMDA's factsheet on the designation (imda.gov.sg, copy of 18 Oct 2026), whose text layer now includes its body as well as the heading 'Digital Trust Centre designated as Singapore's AISI', the dateline 'SINGAPORE – 22 MAY 2024' and the page's last update (10 Oct 2024); and the Singapore AISI's About page (sgaisi.sg, run by the AISI and listed as official; stored as the secondary source, copy of 18 Oct 2026), which describes the mandate, IMDA's and the Digital Trust Centre's roles, the Centre's hosting at NTU and its funding, and the AISI's current work. The factsheet is an announcement of the designation and no separate designation instrument was found, so the title, date and status rest on another official source (level B). The summary, topics and notes now follow the factsheet's body, which gives the AISI's tasks, its initial research areas and the Centre's set-up in June 2022; the AISI page supports IMDA's and the Centre's roles and the current work in the notes.
