Summary
Non-binding framework for the responsible use of AI across the New Zealand Public Service. It sets a vision, 5 principles informed by the OECD AI Principles (inclusive and sustainable development, human-centred values, transparency and explainability, safety and security, and accountability), the legal and policy context, and 6 pillars of the Government Chief Digital Officer's AI work programme: governance, guardrails, capability, innovation, social licence and global voice. It asks agencies to disclose when they use AI systems and to provide human oversight throughout the AI lifecycle.

Status notes
The framework sits within New Zealand's National AI Strategy, launched in July 2025. It follows Cabinet's decision of June 2024 to promote the OECD AI principles, and it records Cabinet's light-touch, proportionate and risk-based approach to AI regulation, under which further intervention should use existing mechanisms in preference to a standalone AI Act. The page shows 'Last updated 29 January 2025' although it refers to the strategy launched in July 2025.

Recheck of 17 Oct 2026: the plain download of the digital.govt.nz page returned a bot-check page; the page was stored with a browser on 17 Oct 2026, rendered and printed to PDF, and its text matches the 11 Oct 2026 copy except for one added menu entry. Title, the 5 principles, the 6 pillars, the non-binding character and 'Last updated 29 January 2025' confirmed. Stored in this run: the framework's A3 PDF (vision, principles, policy context and work programme, with no date) and the 'About digital.govt.nz' page (the site supports the Government Chief Digital Officer role; it does not name a department). No stored file gives a first-publication date, so date_published (January 2025) rests on the page's last-updated date, and none names the Department of Internal Affairs; both stay as published and are listed as open questions.
Second check: Independent check by Claude Code (claude-sonnet-5-5), 2026-10-17: 7 field(s) supported.
