Summary
Whole-of-government policy that sets mandatory requirements for the use of AI by all non-corporate Commonwealth entities, with some exceptions. Version 2.0, effective 15 December 2025, requires departments and agencies to have accountable officials, publish AI transparency statements, develop a strategic approach to AI adoption, operationalise the responsible use of AI, assign accountability for each AI use case, keep internal use case registers, train staff on AI and carry out AI use case impact assessments. It aims to keep government an exemplar in responsible AI use.

Status notes
Version 2.0, the December 2025 update, took effect on 15 December 2025 and replaced version 1.1, which took effect on 1 September 2024. The update added requirements for a strategic approach to AI adoption, for operationalising the responsible use of AI, for designated accountability for AI use cases and for risk-based actions at the level of each use case. The policy is organised in three sections: strategy and oversight, preparedness and operations, and AI use case impact assessment. The DTA publishes with it a technical standard for government's use of AI, an agentic AI addendum, an AI impact assessment tool and the APS AI Plan 2025.

Recheck of 17 Oct 2026: re-read the DTA policy page stored on 11 Oct 2026 (the archiver found it unchanged on 17 Oct 2026). It now shows version 2.0, effective 15 December 2025, and its mandatory requirements; the earlier record described version 1.1. The PDF of version 2.0 linked from the page is not stored (the site's robots.txt does not allow automated downloads), so the requirements rest on the policy page. The page gives the date version 1.1 took effect (1 September 2024), not its issue date, so date_published stays at that date. The version 1.1 deadlines for accountable officials (30 Nov 2024) and transparency statements (28 Feb 2025) in the earlier summary are not on the stored page and were removed; the version label 'Version 1.1' was removed from official_identifier.
Second check: Independent check by Claude Code (claude-sonnet-5-5), 2026-10-17: 9 field(s) supported.
