Summary

Sets up an Australian AI Safety Institute, to become operational in early 2026, to monitor, test and share information on emerging AI technologies, risks and harms. It will help ministers, agencies and regulators keep laws in step with AI developments, test frontier AI models for safety, act as a central hub for coordinated government action, give guidance through the National AI Centre and support Australia's commitments under international AI safety agreements. It will not be a regulator, and its work complements existing legal and regulatory frameworks.

Status notes

Announced on 25 November 2025 in a joint media release of the Minister for Industry and Innovation and the Assistant Minister for Science, Technology and the Digital Economy, a week before the National AI Plan of 2 December 2025, which includes establishing the Institute. Funding is $29.8 million over 4 years from 2025-26 and $7.9 million a year ongoing from 2029-30. The Institute is part of the Department of Industry, Science and Resources. Its page, as of October 2026, sets 3 goals: analyse and test new AI models and applications, support regulators and agencies in responding to emerging AI risks and harms, and shape safe AI development, deployment and international governance. It takes part in joint testing of frontier AI systems through the International Network for Advanced AI Measurement, Evaluation and Science, the renamed International Network of AI Safety Institutes, of which Australia is a founding member.

Refresh of 18 Oct 2026. The Institute was set up by a government decision announced on 25 November 2025; the stored files hold no text of an establishing instrument, so title, date and status rest on announcements and government documents about the Institute, which count as alt-official. Stored for this record: the Department of Industry, Science and Resources news item of 25 November 2025 (the official URL; stored 11 Oct 2026 and found unchanged since), which gives the announcement, the Institute's tasks, its complementary role, operation from early 2026, membership of the international network and the 17 December update on the network's new name; and the Government response to the Senate Select Committee on Adopting Artificial Intelligence (industry.gov.au, tabled 1 April 2026; secondary source), which gives the funding, the testing of frontier AI models and that the Institute will not be a regulator. The minister's joint media release of 25 November 2025 and the Institute's own page on industry.gov.au, which shows it as part of the department with 3 goals, joint testing and publications up to October 2026, were stored by the recheck of 17 Oct 2026.
